Telangiectasias is sometimes referred to as "Spider Veins" when occuring on the legs. They are actually enlarged blood vessels, measuring only a couple of millimeters in diameter. This condition generally manifests itself on the face, upper chest, neck, around the eyes and nose. However, Spider Veins can be prevalent on the thighs and near the ankles.

Telangiectasias appears most often in women, but can sometimes occur in men - especially those with high levels of estrogen. The condition is thought to be hereditary, but can also be the secondary to other systmic diseases.

There are numerous treatments available for Spider Veins, including creams and injections. However the most popular (and effective) forms of treatment, include laser treatment, PhotoDerm (light therapy) and sclerotherapy.

Although generally considered to be more of a cosmetic nusiance rather than a health-threat, it would be wise to have the areas examined by a trained professional. Please consult your dermatologist to decide which might be the most suitable option for your case.
